The saga involving the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool seems minor compared to other allegations against President Trump and his allies. Yet, it is a story of corruption, deception, and power abuse that merits attention.
Questionable Restoration Claims
In April, Trump announced that the Reflecting Pool would be restored, alleging past mismanagement by Presidents Obama and Biden. He awarded no-bid contracts to associates to install a water purification system and redecorate the pool’s bottom with an American flag blue liner, costing $1.5 million. Observers soon noted that the liner began to peel and bubble while algae caused the water to turn a murky green. The estimated repair expenditure soared to over $16 million.
Allegations of Vandalism and Legal Backlash
As the July 4 celebration approached, Trump worried about finishing the renovation on time. On June 19, David Hearn, a former Olympian, was arrested for property destruction when he touched the peeling paint. Trump’s defense machine then accused vandals of defacing the monument, describing a “350-foot gash” supposedly made with knives, lacking photographic proof.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro mirrored Trump’s fiery rhetoric. Known for her controversial statements as Westchester County district attorney, Pirro joined Trump’s narrative. As a Fox News commentator, she faced criticism for attacking Muslims and alleging election fraud, entangling Fox in a costly defamation lawsuit.
Dismissal of Charges and Subsequent Revelations
On July 2, Pirro decried Hearn’s actions in a press conference, yet shifted her stance by July 31, dismissing the charges after acknowledging the damage’s true cause: subpar contractor work. Reports and images documented corner-cutting, poor materials, and overall deficiencies.
Pirro criticized the Department of the Interior for withholding crucial materials. Despite her public claims of having irrefutable evidence, questions remain about her office’s investigative rigor and the evidence presented to the grand jury.
Reactions and Political Ramifications
Trump censured Pirro for dropping the charges, claiming she “choked.” True to his history, Trump refrained from admitting mistakes amid various controversies. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz critiqued the Reflecting Pool incident, suggesting it epitomized Trump’s presidency: “An imaginary problem only Trump claimed he could solve, leading to a flawed execution and self-praise.”
