The Boston Red Sox openly searched for a shortstop during the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. Among their team, Trevor Story is a top-paid position player at this position. He observed the team’s aggressive approach in seeking improvements but felt a sense of relief when no trade materialized. This outcome means he can potentially step back into his role.
Story addressed the situation candidly. “There was speculation, for sure. I saw it,” he remarked on Wednesday, as reported by MassLive’s Chris Cotillo. “But that’s the business side of the game. I can’t control that, especially when I’m not playing. It unfolded how it did. Obviously, I’m happy about that and excited to get back in there, be part of this and contribute all I can to this incredible turnaround.”
The Red Sox were linked to potential trades involving Miami Marlins shortstop Otto Lopez, Washington Nationals shortstop CJ Abrams, and Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz. None of these efforts resulted in a deal. Instead, they pivoted to former Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman.
This situation leaves a void at shortstop. With Story out due to sports hernia surgery, the team has depended on players like Andruw Monasterio, Nick Sogard, and Tsung Che-Cheng. Story, given his leadership, solid defense, and offensive skills, is expected to regain his position upon return.
He anticipates resuming his role soon, with a rehab assignment on the horizon. “We’re re-assessing at the end of the week, how everything went, then what it looks like going forward,” Story explained. “I’m getting to a point where we’re touching close to top speed. Now, it’s about how my body responds.”
The Red Sox look forward to his return. Yet, they expect him to meet his 2025 performance levels, not those from 2024 or 2023. It is essential for Story to demonstrate that he is worthy of reclaiming his starting spot.
