The Los Angeles Rams captured attention at their training camp when retired Super Bowl champion Aaron Donald’s activity surfaced on the NFL transaction wire. His involvement in a workout with the team on Wednesday sparked curiosity, as rumors had circulated about his potential return to the Rams for the upcoming season.
Head coach Sean McVay commented on the situation with a hint of humor. “Best tryout that we’ve ever had,” McVay responded to Gregg Rosenthal, adding, “I think he could make the team.” McVay explained that the transaction allowed them to offer Donald a workout within the rules. Rams run game coordinator and defensive line coach Giff Smith also praised the workout, saying it was the best tryout he had ever witnessed.
Aaron Donald, now 35, is assessing his capacity to rejoin the field for an eleventh season, having last played for the Rams in 2023. Over his career, he has been a ten-time Pro Bowler and three-time Defensive Player of the Year, playing in 154 regular-season games. He has accumulated 543 tackles, 111 sacks, 21 passes defended, and 24 forced fumbles. If Donald returns, he would join a revamped Rams defense that includes new significant additions.
This offseason, the Rams acquired the NFL Defensive Player of the Year and set a new single-season sack record with Myles Garrett from the Cleveland Browns. They also added two-time Super Bowl winner cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs. Donald initially announced his retirement in 2024, citing a lack of interest in training and feeling content with his past achievements in football. Nonetheless, recent developments appear to have reignited his drive, possibly due to the Rams’ current robust roster.
The Rams’ offense remains among the most potent in the league, featuring last year’s NFL Most Valuable Player, quarterback Matthew Stafford, alongside star wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams. The Rams are currently favored to win the Super Bowl in 2027, and Donald’s return would strengthen their standing as top contenders.
