A tragic shooting occurred at a high school outside of Bangkok, Thailand, on Friday. A student at Debsirin Nonthaburi School in Nonthaburi province opened fire, resulting in the deaths of three teachers and three students. Several others were wounded.
Royal Thai Police spokesperson Trairong Piwpan confirmed the incident, indicating that the shooter is hospitalized in serious condition. Fifteen others sustained injuries, with two individuals critically injured.
Reports from French news agency AFP, citing local media, suggest the gunman, a student at the school, is deceased. Conflicting reports indicate the suspect may have died by police gunfire or by suicide. Additionally, a man and woman were found dead at the suspect’s home.
Authorities are investigating the motive behind the attack. It is believed the firearm was taken from a family member of the student.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul extended his condolences and directed officials to support the victims. Images from the scene shortly after the incident showed community members consoling each other. Police and first responders were active at the school.
Witness accounts describe students hiding in classrooms as gunshots rang from another building. Police later facilitated their safe exit.
Similar incidents have occurred in Thailand in recent years. In February, another school shooting involved a teenager stealing a police gun. In 2023, a shooting at a Bangkok mall involved a 14-year-old suspect.
