LeBron James has concluded his closely watched free agency saga by signing a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. This marks the beginning of his remarkable 24th season in the NBA.
James attracted interest from numerous NBA players before reaching his final decision. Tyrese Maxey, who shares the same agent, Rich Paul, as James, reached out with texts and phone calls. Despite this outreach, Maxey noted that James needed little persuasion to join the 76ers.
“Not many. It wasn’t a lot of convincing. Couple phone calls, couple texts,” Maxey shared with team insider John Clark from NBC. “We’re good friends. Now, I guess we’re friends. He’s a lot older than me, but I guess we’re friends.”
In addition to signing James, the 76ers also made headlines by acquiring five-time NBA All-Star Jaylen Brown through a significant trade with the Boston Celtics, their Eastern Conference rivals. Philadelphia’s expected starting lineup now includes James, Maxey, Brown, Joel Embiid, and VJ Edgecombe.
Maxey is coming off his most successful NBA season to date, averaging a personal best of 28.3 points per game in the 2025-26 season. The 25-year-old guard was the second-highest scorer in the Eastern Conference, trailing only Brown, who averaged 28.7 points per game.
The 76ers are poised to be strong contenders from the Eastern Conference for the upcoming season.
