Sen. Murkowski’s Opposition Stirs Uncertainty for Attorney General Nominee

Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has declared her opposition to President Trump’s attorney general nominee, Todd Blanche. This announcement poses a challenge to Blanche’s path to confirmation. Murkowski expressed her stance publicly, emphasizing the need for an attorney general who can counteract the administration’s “worst impulses.” Despite acknowledging Blanche’s capabilities, Murkowski stated her lack of confidence in his potential to fulfill this role.

Murkowski cited her concerns about the broad immunity protections provided to the president and the Department of Justice’s alleged politicization. An additional factor influencing her decision was the anti-weaponization fund. Although the Trump administration claimed this fund was intended for those alleging wrongdoing by the federal government, Blanche informed Congress that the fund had been discontinued. Murkowski remains wary, suggesting the fund’s cessation might only be temporary, contingent on the nomination process.

GOP Senators John Cornyn and Thom Tillis initially postponed the Senate Judiciary Committee’s vote on Blanche’s nomination, seeking written confirmation that the fund was indeed terminated. Blanche delivered this assurance in writing earlier this month.

Murkowski and Senator Susan Collins of Maine have publicly opposed Blanche. Currently serving as acting attorney general, Blanche has been actively engaging with senators to address their concerns. His efforts include traveling to Murkowski’s state to meet with local and tribal leaders. Blanche’s background as a personal attorney for Trump in cases involving hush money, election challenges, and document mishandling remains a point of contention.

With all Democrats expected to vote against the nomination, Blanche faces challenges from within his own party. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is absent, and Murkowski’s opposition limits Blanche’s margin for GOP dissenters. Attention now shifts to Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who has increasingly voiced opposition to Trump following his loss to a Trump-supported candidate.
