Artificial intelligence (AI) has added complexity to online interactions, including dating apps. Singles often question the authenticity of profiles and messages. Instead of disregarding AI, Chabad, a Jewish organization, merges it with traditional matchmaking to help singles forge enduring relationships.
On August 9, Chabad aims to host the world’s largest Jewish virtual speed dating event. This event will bring together 13,000 singles across more than 30 countries. It aligns with Tu B’Av, a Jewish holiday linked to love and matchmaking.
Participants undergo vetting by a local rabbi or rebbetzin (a rabbi’s wife). AI assists in matching individuals for five rounds of one-on-one video dates. This combination of human oversight and technology creates a unique dating experience.
AI’s Role in Modern Dating
Rabbi Mendy Kotlarsky, executive director of Merkos 302, emphasizes that AI should complement human interaction rather than replace it. He notes that AI can analyze data to suggest matches based on shared interests and values. However, the human element remains vital.
Kotlarsky points out that personal interaction is more than verifying identities. It restores a traditional touch to modern dating apps that focus heavily on speed. Although AI offers efficient matchmaking, it cannot replace the trust and guidance provided by someone familiar with the individuals involved.
Purpose of Met@Chabad
The Met@Chabad initiative is not solely about making matches. It aims to reinforce marriage and family at a time when many delay marriage and turn to digital platforms for love. Kotlarsky describes Met@Chabad as a ‘marriage solution’ rather than merely a dating or marriage platform.
Apart from organizing singles events, Met@Chabad provides dating and relationship courses, along with personalized mentoring. Its mission is to transform Jewish dating into a journey toward marriage using advanced technology and timeless Torah wisdom.
The guidance element is crucial. Rabbis and rebbitzins offer mentorship, aid participants in identifying desired qualities in a spouse, and prepare them for marriage. According to Kotlarsky, Met@Chabad is as much about coaching singles as it is about connecting them.
As Kotlarsky explains, people increasingly seek more than algorithms to find a partner. AI should enhance, not replace, the search for a spouse, as human relationships hinge on personal connections.
