DiJonai Carrington of the Chicago Sky was ejected during a game against the Indiana Fever. The referee called a Flagrant 2 foul on Carrington after she hit Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham was shooting a fast-break layup when Carrington, approaching from behind, struck her in the head and neck. This action caused Cunningham to fall as her shot succeeded.
Following the incident, Cunningham quickly rose, charged at Carrington, and pushed her while being restrained by a teammate. Officials reviewed the play and upgraded it to a Flagrant 2 due to the nature of the contact.
Shortly after the incident, Carrington posted on social media, writing “WHITE PRIVILEGE” and tagging the Indiana Fever. Cunningham is white, while Carrington is Black.
The game concluded with Indiana’s victory over Chicago, 90-86.
In a separate incident in the third quarter, Caitlin Clark, a star player for the Fever, received a technical foul. This occurred after she made contact with a referee while being forced out of bounds. This technical was Clark’s eighth of the season, leading to a one-game suspension.

Clark commented regarding the referee’s call. I have already watched it on the tape. So, we’ll let the league decide. But, it wasn’t anything intentional or anything. So, I hope it gets rescinded. And, nothing was said.
Fever coach Stephanie White expressed disagreement with the call, describing it as a bad call.
Cunningham often supports Clark when opponents play physically against her. Recently, Cunningham has been noted for her outspoken stance on transgender participation in women’s sports. Her comments have attracted attention and led to protests and rallies at Fever games in cities like Seattle and Portland.
WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced ongoing discussions regarding transgender participation in women’s basketball, as mentioned in a memo sent to teams.
