Navigating Familial Disagreements Without Losing Bonds

Dear Eric,

I am a 58-year-old daughter with parents aged 94 and 83. They mean the world to me, yet we have not spoken for almost a year. The possibility that I might lose them while we are not on speaking terms is my greatest concern.

This situation is painful. I am afraid that either my father or mother, or both, could pass away while we are estranged. I want to mend our relationship.

When we communicate, political discussions tend to create friction. Whenever I try to express my views, my mother often shuts down the conversation. Her actions frustrate me. I feel she dismisses my perspective.

Despite these disagreements, I deeply care for my parents. I yearn for us to reconnect and have a meaningful dialogue that respects all viewpoints.
