A bride-to-be eager to appear like a princess on her wedding day encountered a significant setback. Polly Bibby, a 26-year-old illustrator, experienced a severe allergic reaction following a fake eyelash treatment.
Bibby opted for classic eyelash extensions prior to her wedding day. This choice marked a departure from her usual minimal makeup routine. She had a patch test conducted and, experiencing no adverse effects, proceeded with the procedure in early July. According to Kennedy News & Media, she initially felt pleased with her enhanced look, which cost her around $88.
“To keep the eyes safe, [artificial] lashes should be applied by an experienced aesthetician in a sanitary setting, with chemicals that are safe for your skin,” said Rebecca J. Taylor, M.D. of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
However, trouble began when Bibby noticed her eyes becoming watery and sore a few hours post-appointment. Initially attributing these symptoms to hay fever, concern grew when her eyes started to sting and stick due to a yellow discharge. An urgent care medical line advised her to visit a nearby hospital.
A photo highlighted her distress, showing red, swollen eyes. At Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Cambridge, medical staff diagnosed her condition as an allergic reaction to the eyelash extensions. Doctors provided her with antibiotics and antihistamines, instructing her to wait three days before removing the lashes.
Dr. Taylor warned that such procedures pose risks like trauma or infection to the eyelid or cornea, allergic reactions to the glue, and potential eyelash loss. Inadequate hygiene or mistakes during application can also lead to infections.
As Bibby’s skin gradually healed, she worried about her appearance on her wedding day. Her fiancé, Benjamin May, shared these concerns. Bibby, based in Cambridgeshire, desired to caution other brides about pursuing certain beauty treatments close to significant events.
Bibby explained that she rarely wore makeup. She viewed the extensions as a trial for her wedding, having never tried them before. She noticed the redness a few hours after the appointment. By nightfall, her eyes were very swollen and painful. She compared her appearance humorously to ‘Sloth’ from The Goonies, lamenting her change in appearance.
Bibby described her eyes as “burning” and noted increasing vision loss from the discharge, which resembled conjunctivitis. Hospital staff appeared shocked by her severe reaction. Bibby recounted the painful process of having the false lashes removed, describing it as excruciating.
Reflecting on her experience, Bibby acknowledged, “I didn’t realize it would happen to me,” highlighting the unpredictability of such reactions. She decided against eyelash extensions for the wedding, preferring natural options like mascara.
Bibby expressed a desire to prevent others from experiencing similar ordeals. She openly shared her story, hoping brides would carefully consider beauty treatments before significant milestones.
