Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to excel in theaters, earning $144.5 million in its second weekend in North America, according to studio estimates. This Sony-Marvel film has collected $1.67 billion globally in just ten days, making it one of the fastest-growing blockbusters. In the U.S. and Canada, the movie grossed $655.1 million, while international earnings have surpassed $1 billion. It took only seven days to become the highest-grossing film of the year, overtaking Toy Story 5, which earned $1.07 billion worldwide. No Sony movie had previously reached $100 million during its second weekend. Although Brand New Day nearly broke the sophomore weekend record set by The Force Awakens at $149.2 million in 2015, it fell short.
Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey has also passed the billion-dollar mark. In its fourth weekend, the film earned $31.5 million domestically, bringing its global total to $1.1 billion. It is Nolan’s biggest hit, excluding inflation, surpassing both The Dark Knight Rises with $1.08 billion and 2009’s The Dark Knight at $1 billion. Oppenheimer, another of Nolan’s films, narrowly missed the billion mark, earning $975 million.
The Odyssey
The Odyssey has been successful on IMAX screens, generating $147.3 million in the U.S., placing it as the highest-grossing domestic release in IMAX history. The film will launch in China soon, adding to its earnings. Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey have significantly contributed to Hollywood’s strong box office resurgence since the pandemic.
Ticket sales are currently up 18.5% compared to last year, according to Rentrak. Five films have crossed the $1 billion mark this year, surpassing any year since 2019. The other two include Michael and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Rentrak anticipates that summer theater revenue will reach $4 billion, a benchmark of a prosperous season. Since the pandemic, only the summer of 2023 surpassed $4 billion, driven by Barbie and Oppenheimer. Revenue is currently $14.8 million short of the $4 billion mark.
Two comedies tried to balance the blockbuster market but had little impact. One Night Only, a romantic comedy directed by Will Gluck, opened with $5.7 million. The film cost around $25 million and received mixed reviews, scoring 46% on Rotten Tomatoes but a “B+” on CinemaScore. Super Troopers 3, from Fox Searchlight, debuted with $4 million. It is the latest installment in the comedy series by Broken Lizard.
Two limited releases performed exceptionally well in theaters. A24’s Tony, featuring Dominic Sessa as a young Anthony Bourdain, grossed $348,955, achieving one of the best per-theater averages of the year at $58,159. Mubi’s Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, directed by Jane Schoenbrun, achieved a per-location average of $50,300 across five screens.
