A drone carrying explosives entered Bulgaria from Romania and exploded near a key international gas pipeline on Saturday. This incident has led to increased surveillance along the border shared by the two NATO member countries.
Incident Details
The explosion occurred shortly after 5 a.m. approximately 330 feet within Bulgarian territory, as reported by Prime Minister Rumen Radev. It took place in a sunflower field near Kardam village, 200 meters from a Romanian compressor station and 1 kilometer from Bulgaria’s station on the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline.
No casualties or infrastructure damage were reported. Authorities isolated the area to conduct an investigation. The pipeline connects Turkey with Ukraine through the Balkans.
The drone’s origin remained uncertain at first, but Bulgaria’s Defense Ministry mentioned a preliminary analysis suggested that it was likely a Maya decoy drone, commonly used by Ukraine’s forces, according to The Associated Press.
The ministry issued a statement saying there is no immediate evidence suggesting an intentional act. Neither Bulgaria nor Romania detected the drone prior to the explosion. Romania’s Defense Ministry confirmed no airspace breach was recorded heading toward Bulgaria.
Security Measures
Bulgaria plans to enhance border surveillance and relocate anti-drone detection equipment from its Turkish border to the Romanian frontier. Defense Minister Dimitar Stoyanov mentioned that Sofia would raise the matter at NATO’s North Atlantic Council meeting next week.
Stoyanov pointed out the drone carried substantial explosives, emitting significant black smoke during the blast. Its small size and low flight path make these drones challenging to detect.
Significance of the Trans-Balkan Pipeline
The Trans-Balkan pipeline plays a crucial role by connecting gas networks of Turkey and Ukraine via Bulgaria, Romania, and Moldova. It can transport gas both directions, serving as a supply route for Ukraine and Eastern Europe.
No damage to the pipeline or related infrastructure was reported at the Negru Vodă-Kardam interconnection, which links Bulgarian and Romanian systems. This pipeline is vital in diversifying regional energy supplies and offering Ukraine access to southern European gas, including from Greece, as per Romanian operator Transgaz.
Operators from Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, and Ukraine have provided capacity for Ukraine-bound gas deliveries.
Russia Launches Strikes on Ukraine
Overnight, Russia attacked Ukraine with six ballistic missiles and more than 150 drones, resulting in four deaths in Kyiv and surrounding areas. Ukrainian forces intercepted 135 drones, though ballistics breached defenses.
Among the deceased were a 3-year-old boy and his grandparents in the Brovary district near Kyiv, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky. Another fatality occurred in Kyiv.
The incident has raised concerns about stock levels of Ukraine’s Patriot interceptor missiles. Zelensky requested further international backing and stressed harsher sanctions on Moscow to enable Kyiv to produce more interceptors internally.
Ukraine also conducted long-range drone assaults on oil refineries in Russia’s Krasnodar and Samara regions. Kyiv contends that targeting Russia’s energy sector is critical since it finances Moscow’s military actions.
