Jennifer Esposito’s Journey with Celiac Disease

Jennifer Esposito has shared her experience with a challenging health battle that changed her career path, leading to severe depression and a stay in a psychiatric ward before being diagnosed with celiac disease.

In a conversation on Maria Menounos’ “Heal Squad” podcast, Esposito, 53, discussed her struggles as a young actress in New York City. Her unexplained health issues forced her to pause her life and career. “I had a whole life beginning in the city, and I was a young actor and I had to stop everything,” she said.

The actress described the profound depression she faced and her thoughts of suicide amidst a lack of clear diagnosis. “They brought me to a psychologist, like they had me on every medication. They wanted to give me shock treatment at one point because I wasn’t responding,” she recalled, noting her sensitivity to medication.

Over time, Esposito began to suspect a link between her health symptoms and nutrition. “I realized that there was a major connection with what I was eating and my vitamins and then my body,” she said.

While working on the ABC comedy “Samantha Who?,” Esposito experienced severe physical symptoms such as hair and fingernail loss, as well as a dental issue where a tooth came out during a scene. She was given multiple misdiagnoses, including multiple sclerosis and irritable bowel syndrome, with some suggesting her condition was due to stress.

Facing desperation, Esposito attended a non-denominational church for solace. On one occasion, a close call with an accident on the road renewed her determination to find answers.

Finally, after years of uncertainty, a doctor diagnosed her with celiac disease. “I’m not sure how you’re alive,” the doctor reportedly said, highlighting the severity of her case that had led to liver issues.

Celiac disease, an autoimmune condition, is triggered by consuming gluten and affects the small intestine, leading to symptoms beyond the digestive system. The primary treatment is a lifelong gluten-free diet.

Post-diagnosis, Esposito took steps to heal, embracing a rigorous gluten-free diet. Her recovery was arduous due to her body’s depleted condition, including severe vitamin D deficiency and sensitivity to sunlight. She was on medication to manage her symptoms while striving to reclaim her health.

Two months after her diagnosis, Esposito worked with a medical professional interested in her case’s severity. She began taking control of her health and explored explanations for her condition. Despite facing psychological struggles, including a traumatic experience in a psychiatric ward, Esposito pursued understanding her illness.

Her journey emphasizes the significance of addressing underlying health conditions. “If you heal your gut, I promise you, not everything can go away,” she stated, noting that recovery demands patience.

Now residing outside the United States, Esposito reports no longer suffering from panic attacks. She describes a change in lifestyle emphasizing quality time and enjoyment without the intrusion of digital distractions.

Reflecting on her ordeal, she views her celiac disease diagnosis as transformative. “Celiac disease saved my life. One hundred percent,” she said. Overcoming years of stress and battling “fight or flight” responses, she credits the condition with crucial life changes that spared her from worse outcomes.

Jennifer Esposito’s story serves as a reminder of the impact of proper diagnosis and care, offering lessons for others facing similar struggles.
