Less than a week after being shot and losing a leg while protecting three deputies, Florida K-9 Ace made an emotional return to the sheriff’s office on Tuesday. Ace, a 7-year-old German shepherd, has been part of the Polk County Sheriff’s Office since March 2020. He was injured when deputies attempted to arrest Angel Bowers, aged 27.
Bowers allegedly fired at least four rounds at three deputies after failing to appear in court. The deputies responded, and Bowers was killed during the incident. Ace was hit in his left front leg, which shattered the bone and tore an artery, causing severe blood loss.
“Ace protected the deputies, contributing significantly to their safety,” said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. Unfortunately, he was wounded in the line of duty.”
Deputy Natalie Oestreich, Ace’s handler and partner, administered initial treatment and removed him from danger. Ace was then taken to Parkway Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Lakeland. After stabilization, he was flown to the Veterinary Medical Center at Lakewood Ranch. There, veterinarians performed surgery to amputate his left front leg.
On Sunday, the sheriff’s office released a video showing Ace’s lively spirits as he prepared to leave the veterinary center. “Upon waking from the anesthesia, Ace attempted to walk out of there,” the sheriff’s office detailed. “He has not been deterred since.”
Footage showed Ace engaging with deputies, walking out of the center to applause while sporting a shirt that read “ride or die.” Two days later, he returned to the sheriff’s office, marking his first visit since the incident.
“Look at Ace. He’s happy, eating, and active,” Sheriff Judd shared. “We’re immensely proud of Natalie and Ace. They saved lives by standing firm.”
Ace will retire from law enforcement but enjoys the affection of his colleagues. Deputy Oestreich will focus on Ace’s recovery before returning to work. “Enjoy your retirement, Ace,” Judd encouraged.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office commemorated Ace on social media, stating, “Although his days of chasing criminals are done, Ace remains a hero in our hearts!” The Polk Sheriff’s Charities Inc. initiated a K-9 fund to aid in Ace’s care, inviting those interested to contribute via their website.
