In the National League, the Dodgers, Braves, and Brewers have solidified their divisional leads, seemingly coasting towards the finish. Meanwhile, the Pirates and the Marlins compete for the remaining Wild Card spots.
Pittsburgh Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates have experienced fluctuations this season. At times, they have appeared as one of the stronger teams in the league. Their hitting, a previous concern addressed in the offseason, has markedly improved. However, pitching challenges persist. Notably, superstar Paul Skenes has shown a decline in performance this year. His current statistics remain impressive but are the lowest of his career thus far. If the Pirates’ other starters can deliver, a potential hot streak could emerge.
One player needing to step up is today’s starter, Carmen Mlodzinski. With a current record of 6-4, a 3.51 ERA, and a 1.36 WHIP, Mlodzinski has shown better results on the road, boasting a 3.10 ERA. His appearances have been brief, as an opener, not exceeding three innings in his last 12 appearances. Marlins’ hitters are 0-for-4 against him, indicating a competitive matchup.
Miami Marlins
The Miami Marlins have quietly assembled a strong season despite underexposure due to their divisional rivals. The franchise, known for trading talented players and limited investments, faces challenges in gaining recognition. Currently positioned at 61-59, they excel at home. With the Braves, Phillies, and major market Mets overshadowing them, the Marlins’ efforts often go unnoticed.

Although he faces challenges from hits, his control remains steady. He typically pitches no more than five innings, with a notable improvement since a poor performance in July. Game Expectations
The game promises action and offense, with neither pitcher exhibiting unhittable traits. Both starters are unlikely to pitch deep into the game.
