One student was injured during a shooting at a high school in Warner Robins, Georgia, on Wednesday afternoon. A 14-year-old student is currently in custody. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office reported that the incident took place at Warner Robins High School. Initially, authorities mentioned two injuries, but Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton later confirmed that only one student was hurt.
According to officials, the shooting stemmed from an argument between two ninth-grade students in a school bathroom. The confrontation escalated, leading one student to shoot the other. The suspect, after firing the gun, fled the scene but was later apprehended in a nearby neighborhood. Fortunately, the incident only resulted in one injury, which could have been more severe, noted Sheriff Moulton.
Authorities have not yet disclosed how the firearm was obtained or its ownership. The charges the suspect might face have also not been shared. As a precaution, Warner Robins High School will remain closed for the rest of the week. Staff will not be present on Thursday, but the school’s crisis team will offer support to students and staff on Friday and Monday.
Warner Robins is situated about 100 miles south of Atlanta in central Georgia.
Reactions to the shooting have been swift from officials. Mayor LaRhonda W. Patrick expressed sorrow over the incident’s proximity to the community. She thanked public safety officers for their quick response in ensuring the safety of students. Governor Brian Kemp also commended the responders, expressing gratitude for maintaining control of the situation. As investigations continue, he acknowledged the ongoing efforts to protect classrooms.
Senator Raphael Warnock stated that he is closely monitoring the situation and offered prayers for the injured student. He thanked law enforcement and first responders for their work on the scene.
