Jim Nantz, the leading play-by-play announcer for CBS Sports, discussed Tony Romo’s recent OWI arrest. The incident has led to changes in the broadcast booth as they prepare for another NFL season. Nantz and Romo have been partners since the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback signed a 10-year deal with CBS Sports.
During a media event called “NFL on CBS Media Day,” Nantz was questioned by Awful Announcing about Romo’s situation. Nantz explained that he had been focusing on other commitments, particularly golf events, while maintaining communication with Romo.
“I really was just laying low,” Nantz said. “I had golf events to do and I knew they had a lot to look at and sort out. I was going to communicate with Tony, which we have, back and forth. I just kind of wanted to focus on what’s in front of me, and that’s what I’ve done.”
Romo was apprehended by Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office deputies for alleged impairment while driving in Wisconsin, returning from a golf event. He was charged with operating while intoxicated, having an open container, and unsafe passing.
At the same media day, CBS Sports President David Berson stated that Romo’s situation is under review. “We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand,” Berson noted, emphasizing the importance of focusing on their presentation.
CBS Sports has announced that J.J. Watt will replace Romo, sitting alongside Nantz. Despite the changes, Nantz expressed personal support for Romo.
“Tony is a great friend of mine and has been for years,” Nantz shared. “He and I go back to 2011 when he got married, I was invited to his wedding. So, he’s a great friend, continues to be, always will be.”
Romo remains in the middle of his significant 10-year, $180 million contract with CBS, with $72 million still pending from his 2020 signing. OutKick reported doubts surrounding Romo’s role at CBS even before his arrest, hinting at uncertainties about his tenure after the 2026 season.
Concerns about Romo’s preparation and chemistry with Nantz have surfaced, with some critics pointing to a perceived decline over recent seasons. Additionally, his contract may contain a morals clause, which CBS could use to terminate his contract over the arrest footage, though legal challenges could follow.
Romo’s court date is on September 21, shortly after CBS Sports’ first NFL broadcast of the season with Nantz and Watt. CBS will also broadcast the Super Bowl in 2028.
