New Research Links Birth Order to Health Outcomes
A recent study involving data from 10 million U.S. siblings indicates that birth order could influence specific health risks. Conducted by researchers from the University of Chicago and Columbia University, the analysis examined medical data spanning two decades. It found significant links between birth order and 150 health conditions.
Health Risks by Birth Order
First-born children exhibited a higher likelihood of neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders like autism, ADHD, Tourette’s, and OCD. They also showed increased rates of immune-allergic conditions, such as food allergies. In contrast, second-born children were more prone to migraines, shingles, substance use disorders, and gastrointestinal issues like gastritis.

Potential Explanations and Theories
Dr. Siegel offered theories on these health disparities. He suggested that first-born children might receive more parental attention, leading to heightened stimuli and potential risk factors for ADHD. He also noted that first-borns’ immune systems may encounter new environmental exposures, possibly increasing allergy risks.
Dr. Siegel discussed biological differences between pregnancies. He proposed that second-born children might face distinct conditions because the womb transforms after the first pregnancy, influencing their development.
The study also indicated emotional factors that might explain higher rates of substance use disorders among second-borns. Dr. Siegel speculated these children could seek attention or emotional responses from their parents.
