Sarah Trone Garriott’s Congressional Campaign Faces Scrutiny Over Locker Room Policy

Sarah Trone Garriott, running for Congress in Iowa’s 3rd District, seeks to clarify her stance on locker room policies. In her campaign video, she emphasizes, “I oppose letting men in women’s locker rooms.” Trone Garriott, a mother of two attending Iowa public schools, is addressing claims made by her opponents.

I’m a mom with two kids in Iowa public schools. Their education and safety literally keep me up at night. So, when my opponent cherry-picks and twists my record, I have to set it straight, Trone Garriott said.

Despite her declarations, her voting history in the Iowa legislature complicates her current position. She aims to unsettle incumbent Rep. Zach Nunn in one of the country’s most competitive seats. However, Republicans highlight prior actions contrasting her current campaign.

Trone Garriott faced criticism in the past for a Muslim prayer at the Iowa Senate and officiating a satanic wedding as a Lutheran minister. Her views on bathroom policy received attention from Vice President J.D. Vance, who noted a specific vote pattern.

Vance referred to votes made by Trone Garriott: a 2023 law restricting bathroom access based on biological sex and a 2022 sports eligibility law. She voted against these measures.

Trone Garriott previously suggested that such policies were influenced by racial and gender tensions. In her 2023 address, she stated, “It’s very threatening of the idea of the white, male powerful figure because it muddies the waters and makes things ambiguous and confusing.” She spoke on issues involving legislative responses and community conflicts concerning private school funding and parents’ rights.

Her campaign has yet to clearly reconcile these past positions with her current campaign messages. A campaign spokesperson reiterated her locker room stance, “Sarah does not want men in women’s locker rooms.” Emphasizing parental rights, the spokesperson commented on her commitment to children’s safety.

In a recent video, Trone Garriott stated, “Politicians have become too extreme on these issues. I’ll always put kids and families first.” Some political analysts remain skeptical of her position adjustments, such as Zach Kraft from the RNC, who criticized her record and statements.

Trone Garriott is set to challenge Nunn in the upcoming November 3rd election. In the previous election, Nunn secured victory with 51.8% of the vote against Democrat Lanon Baccam, who garnered 47.9%.
