The American flag waves proudly atop the U.S. Capitol building in Washington as Alabamans head to the polls in several congressional districts. This follows the postponement of primary contests originally scheduled months earlier.
Republican Governor Kay Ivey initiated special primaries in Alabama’s 1st, 2nd, 6th, and 7th Congressional Districts. This decision comes after a crucial Supreme Court ruling weakened aspects of the Voting Rights Act. As a result, Alabama is utilizing a previously contested House map which offers advantages to the GOP.
In contrast, voters in Alabama’s other three House districts cast their votes in May. The polls for these special primaries will close at 7 p.m. EDT.
