North Carolina state Representative Jennifer Balkcom has been selected as the new Republican nominee for the state’s 11th Congressional District. This follows current Representative Chuck Edwards’ decision to withdraw his re-election bid.
The North Carolina Republican Party’s 11th Congressional District Executive Committee made the announcement on Monday. Reports indicate that U.S. Senator Ted Budd and U.S. Representative Greg Murphy, both Republicans from North Carolina, have endorsed Balkcom.
Chuck Edwards, the incumbent, recently announced he would not seek re-election after a House Ethics report recommended censure. The report detailed improper conduct towards two young female staffers and described his behavior as unprofessional and inappropriate.
“I’m blessed to receive the Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District,” Balkcom expressed. Her statement, shared via screenshots, criticized the Democratic Party for abandoning their values. Balkcom stated that radical socialism and extremism threaten the nation, and she emphasized the importance of countering these with her campaign.
Balkcom will compete against Democratic candidate Jamie Ager in the general election. Zach Almond, the executive director of the North Carolina Republican Party, praised Balkcom’s nomination. He highlighted her background in agriculture, banking, and finance as assets for Western North Carolina.
Chuck Edwards confirmed his decision to conclude his term and step down from re-election last week. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Western North Carolina, calling it an honor.
The House Committee on Ethics found Edwards’ conduct towards female staffers inappropriate, including sharing lavish gifts and making personal comments. Despite denying any romantic intent, Edwards acknowledged that a reasonable observer might interpret his actions differently.
