Eric Bieniemy, the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, is dealing with a family crisis. His son, Elijah Bieniemy, aged 27, faces charges in connection with the shooting of his mother, Mia Bieniemy. The incident occurred in Ashburn, Virginia, where Mia suffered multiple gunshot wounds. She is now in stable condition.
Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid expressed support, stating the organization stands with the Bieniemy family during this difficult time. Mia was shot on July 26, prompting Eric Bieniemy to depart from his coaching role temporarily to be with his family.
Eric Bieniemy returned to Kansas City before the team played against the Los Angeles Rams in the preseason. Bieniemy mentioned that his wife’s recovery influenced his decision to return. He joked that living with family during Mia’s recovery led to some gentle encouragement from her to resume his coaching duties.

Eric Bieniemy has remained connected with the Chiefs during his time away, watching practices and participating in meetings remotely. During a discussion with Chiefs general manager Brett Veach, he made a coaching point while Andy Reid sat beside Veach.
Elijah Bieniemy’s legal situation involves several charges, including malicious wounding and use of a firearm in commission of a felony. A mental-health competency evaluation is required before his court appearance.
Eric Bieniemy expressed gratitude for the support his family has received, saying, I’d like to say thank you to the Hunt family, the entire Chiefs family for the outpouring, the love and support that my family has received through this particular situation.
He emphasized the need to focus on football as his wife continues to recover.
Throughout his career, Bieniemy has been part of coaching staffs that led the Chiefs to three Super Bowl appearances, winning two. After a stint with the Washington Commanders, he spent a season at UCLA and later returned to Kansas City to replace Matt Nagy.
During Eric Bieniemy’s absence, the team felt his absence deeply. Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton appreciated his return, acknowledging Bieniemy’s competitive spirit that drives the team to excel.
