A 16-year-old girl has been arrested in Tennessee for attacking a middle school football player during a game, an incident caught on video and widely shared online. The event took place on a Tuesday night at a game between South Middle School and Cornersville Middle School, hosted at Franklin County High School.
The altercation followed a touchdown scored by South Middle School. Officials had just called penalties for actions occurring away from the main play when the girl unexpectedly ran onto the field, tackling a South player. The player managed to stand but was quickly pushed down again by the girl.
The situation was promptly managed by coaches and players who separated the girl from the player. In a statement, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office described the incident: “A fan ran onto the field and tackled a player.” The game was immediately halted by referees, the field cleared, and the stadium emptied without further issues. No injuries were reported.
The suspect, released to her parents, now faces charges of assault and disorderly conduct. Additionally, she is permanently banned from all Franklin County School System properties and prohibited from attending any Cornersville games for the next year, both at home and away.
The game was in its third quarter when the incident occurred, resulting in a 35-0 victory awarded to South Middle School.
