The Importance of Balance Training for Health and Longevity

Californians are familiar with various health and longevity methods available on the market. From cryotherapy chambers to hyperbaric oxygen therapy and various supplements, the options are numerous. However, one of the most impactful practices for extending lifespans is much simpler: standing on one leg.

Balance training involves simple exercises, such as standing on one leg for 30 seconds regularly, to build better balance. UCLA Health sports medicine physician Kimberly M. Burbank highlights the importance of balance as it reflects the coordination between our brain, nerves, and muscles. This coordination is a critical predictor of health and healthy aging, as poor balance can be an early sign of dementia.

Traditionally, cardio, strength training, and stretching have been the primary approaches to enhance health and lifespan. Experts now include balance as a crucial factor because poor balance can lead to falls, especially in older adults, triggering physical and mental decline. Balance requires integrating multiple sensory systems like sight, the inner ear, and spatial awareness.

Improving balance benefits individuals of all ages, enhancing athletic performance and confidence in physical movements.

How to Test and Improve Balance

Recently, a balance series was launched exploring balance’s importance, decline with age, and ways to improve balance. Sports medicine doctors, physiologists, trainers, and therapists shared simple home exercises to enhance balance. Video demonstrations are included.

A useful starting point is taking a balance IQ test to assess your balance level. Following this, try four simple balance exercises at home without any equipment. Additionally, plyometric exercises can help develop power, reactivity, and bone density. If seeking a gentler approach, consider tai chi, an ancient martial art known for enhancing balance and preventing falls.

Why Start Balance Training Now

Beginning balance training early helps prevent muscle imbalances and injuries. It enhances athletic performance and helps maintain balance as you age. Taking 30 seconds to stand on one leg while watching TV can be more beneficial than more extreme health approaches.

Note: Balance training can start at any age, and its benefits extend beyond health, contributing to overall well-being.
