A Tribute to Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt
Loyola University Chicago marked the beginning of the academic year with the unveiling of a statue honoring Sister Jean Dolores Schmidt. Sister Jean, a beloved figure at the university, passed away in October at the age of 106. The statue was revealed on her birthday, August 21, 2026.
Margaret Mary, an alumna of Mundelein College, was present at the event. Mundelein College merged with Loyola in 1991, and Sister Jean was a faculty member there before integrating into Loyola’s community.
Event Details
The dedication ceremony took place with several attendees, including alumni and university staff. A commemorative sign was displayed next to the statue, further celebrating Sister Jean’s legacy.
The statue was crafted by sculptor Littleton Alston, who attended the unveiling. The event fostered a sense of remembrance and pride among those who gathered to honor Sister Jean.
