Though their batting has improved, the pitching remains a concern.
Paul Skenes, their starter today, embodies the season’s struggles with a 9-11 record, a 3.95 ERA, and a 1.14 WHIP. While the WHIP is promising, the elevated ERA hints at underlying issues. Against the Padres, however, he has limited them to just three hits in 24 at-bats.

The San Diego Padres aim to secure the last Wild Card spot with about a month remaining. They sit ten games over .500, mirroring their previous season’s pattern. They reached the playoffs via the Wild Card last year, following a strong post-All-Star Break performance. This year, they’re on a similar track, transitioning from a balanced record to a position ten games above .500.
Michael King will take the mound for the Padres. His record stands at 8-9, with a 3.38 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. He ranks 41st in the Majors with 128 strikeouts. Notably, he excels in home starts and night games, boasting a 2.81 ERA over 93 innings in night conditions. Against Pirates hitters, he’s allowed a .250 average over 40 at-bats.
Player Prop Betting Insight
Considering player props, Brandon Lowe has struggled against King, going 2-for-13 with five strikeouts. While not overly confident in Lowe’s hit potential, it’s a viable option. For the game itself, supporting King seems wise. Skenes hasn’t matched his previous performances, and King thrives at home and at night. The Padres’ bullpen also outperforms the Pirates’. Thus, the Padres are a solid pick here.
