Junior quarterback Brody Guthrie from Kaneland is proving himself on the field by thinking outside traditional norms. His journey started last season when he was elevated to varsity as a backup to Jalen Carter, raising questions for Knights coach Mike Thorgesen.
“We kind of went against our norm,” said Thorgesen, explaining that typically players are only promoted if they will play. Guthrie was brought up to sit behind the starting quarterback but still played in junior varsity games. Thorgesen noted, “Brody got some experience and knows the offense well, preparing him to take over.”
The decision appears promising after Kaneland’s 49-7 victory against Rock Island, where Guthrie started as the varsity quarterback. He completed 9 of 11 passes, achieving 203 yards and three touchdowns. His accuracy shone through as he connected with senior wide receiver Colten Van Dyke for two touchdowns, while Cooper Stombres also contributed with another.
“I felt amazing about the opportunity,” Guthrie remarked. Despite stepping into the field occasionally last season due to injury, it was a chance for him to learn from seniors and his coaches, preparing for varsity-level play.
His predecessor, Jalen Carter, now a freshman defensive back at Northern Illinois, mentored Guthrie. Guthrie appreciated Carter’s guidance during practice and valued his presence on the sidelines during Guthrie’s debut varsity game.
Guthrie’s beginnings in football were diverse. Originally starting as a safety and a receiver, he transitioned through positions in his youth teams. He eventually found his footing as a quarterback in eighth grade, following a significant growth spurt.
Personal coaching by former Chicago Bears quarterback Mike Hohensee and participation in a 7-on-7 team in Rockford supplement his development. He attends Hohensee’s sessions dubbed ‘The Breakfast Club,’ practicing early Sunday mornings with teammates.
Coach Thorgesen noted Guthrie’s commitment: “Brody is always working at it and wants to get better,” showing dedication to improving his skills.
Guthrie’s peers recognize his leadership, electing him as a captain for Kaneland. As the offense rebuilds under Guthrie, Coach Thorgesen relies on a veteran defense to support the team’s growth during this season.
In Guthrie’s own words, “We have skill at every position and determined players who want to win.” He expresses confidence in the team’s potential for success this season.
