The Seattle Seahawks faced a challenging situation in the third quarter against the New England Patriots, trailing 10-0. Their starting quarterback, Sam Darnold, exited the game after his first drive due to a hip injury.
Drew Lock, the backup quarterback, initially struggled. His first four drives culminated in punts. However, Lock showed promise during the Seahawks’ final third-quarter drive, engineering a 31-yard progression that ended with a field goal, putting Seattle on the scoresheet.
The fourth quarter saw Lock’s performance elevate. He connected with receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a 45-yard touchdown pass. He continued this momentum by orchestrating another drive, resulting in a field goal, securing a 13-10 lead for the Seahawks with 5:50 left in the game.
Drake Maye, the Patriots quarterback, threw his third interception in the fourth quarter, effectively sealing the game in Seattle’s favor.
“I know what kind of defense we have,” Lock explained in his post-game NBC broadcast interview. “I know the playmakers that we have on this side of the ball, on the opposite side of the ball. If I take care of the football, get it in their hands, don’t turn it over, win the turnover battle, by the end of the game, I’d like to think we’d have a pretty good shot at winning. Sure enough, 13-10.”
Lock concluded the game with a solid record, completing 16 of 22 passes for 187 yards and one touchdown. He also contributed an additional 13 rushing yards without committing any turnovers, a crucial factor in securing the victory.
Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald informed reporters post-game that tests ruled out a fracture for Darnold, suggesting that his absence might not be prolonged, but further evaluation is necessary.
