On September 11, Iran-backed Houthi rebels captured Perim Island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. This development creates a new front at a vital global shipping chokepoint. A former Pentagon official warned the militants had placed themselves in a dangerous position.
The island’s capture follows a month-long offensive along Yemen’s western coast. More than 1,500 soldiers were killed, forcing Yemen’s government to acknowledge a defeat, according to The Associated Press.
“With Perim, they have control over a vital chokepoint in the Red Sea,” said Morgan Murphy, a former Pentagon press secretary and retired Navy captain. “But they’ve positioned themselves vulnerably,” Murphy warned, emphasizing the strength of U.S. forces in the region.
The strategic gain of Perim, also known as Mayun, places the Houthis near a crucial maritime route. The island’s location offers a key vantage point. Historically, it has been targeted for control by various global powers including the French and British.
Murphy noted that the island is uninhabitable with no vegetation or water resources. Satellite imagery shows a runway and military hangars attributed to previous construction by the United Arab Emirates.
Despite having infrastructure such as an airstrip, the Houthis lack the sophisticated air power needed to effectively use it. Murphy highlighted the overwhelming force options available to the U.S. military if intervention is considered necessary.
Developments occur amid diplomatic discussions involving Washington, Riyadh, and the Houthis. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has urged the U.S. for military action, but President Donald Trump has declined direct intervention, opting for intelligence support instead.
According to reports, the Houthi forces are sustained by Iranian support and tactical direction from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). U.S. estimates suggest numerous IRGC officers are active in Yemen.
Murphy compared the Houthis’ strategy to historical naval power struggles, noting their outdated tactics. He emphasized the United States’ strong naval presence as essential in countering such regional threats.
Expectations are for coordinated efforts by the Trump administration, in partnership with allies, to ensure these key shipping channels remain open and secure.
