President Donald Trump addressed allegations of Chinese entities providing satellite imagery to Iran prior to an attack that resulted in the deaths of three U.S. troops. During a conversation with reporters on Air Force One, Trump responded to a Wall Street Journal report about the alleged provision of high-resolution satellite images of Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan. This attack by Iran occurred on July 17.
Trump stated, “They basically do what we do,” pointing out that spying activities are mutual between the U.S. and China. When questioned about any potential discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visit to the U.S., Trump remarked that both nations behave reasonably towards each other. “You know what they say? That China spies on us. I say you’re right, and we spy on them, too,” he added.
U.S. officials have connected the satellite images to the Iranian missile strike on the Jordanian base, highlighting it as evidence of support from Chinese entities having dire consequences for American forces. The report, however, did not identify the specific Chinese entities nor accuse Beijing of direct involvement.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is scheduled for a summit with Trump in Washington on September 24. The White House did not provide an immediate response regarding the situation.
