Cubs Win Overshadowed by Alex Bregman’s Injury

The Chicago Cubs secured a dominant 9-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, bringing them closer to a playoff berth. However, the win was marred by a concerning injury to third baseman Alex Bregman. During the fourth inning, a foul ball struck Bregman in the face, resulting in immediate concerns for his health.

Bregman was standing near the dugout when the ball, hit by Michael Busch, bounced off the dirt and hit him on the left side of his face. He clutched his cheek in pain and was quickly taken to a local hospital. Manager Craig Counsell reported that the ball left a cut on Bregman’s left cheekbone, causing some nasal bleeding. Although initial evaluations for a concussion were inconclusive, Counsell expressed concern that symptoms could develop later.

Bregman was expected to travel back with the team after the game. Counsell remarked, “It looked like it might have broken his nose. We need to ensure his overall well-being.” The Cubs, with a day off on Monday, are unlikely to provide further updates on Bregman’s status until Tuesday when they face the Miami Marlins.

The team’s optimism for a quick recovery is tempered by the tight schedule, with only six games left before the postseason begins on September 29. The incident left Bregman’s teammates worried, highlighting the unpredictable nature of such injuries.

“You never want to see that on the ball field,” shared Michael Busch. “It’s tough to focus after witnessing something like that.”

Despite the incident, the Cubs performed strongly. They reduced their playoff magic number to one with an impressive performance. Pitcher David Peterson delivered six solid innings, allowing only three hits and striking out seven. The Cubs’ offense was equally effective, tallying nine runs with 13 hits.

Pete Crow-Armstrong broke his brief slump with three hits, including a home run that tied him for the major-league lead at 45 homers. His performance included his 38th stolen base and 30th double of the season, making him one of the few players in MLB history to achieve 30-plus doubles, 35-plus stolen bases, and 40-plus home runs in a single season.

“It’s all about commitment and conviction,” explained Crow-Armstrong on his return to form. “That feeling comes from within, and when I’m successful, it’s when I truly believe in my actions.”

Counsell praised Crow-Armstrong’s season achievements. “He’s set a high standard this year, and even a short slump feels notable,” he stated.
