Actor Javier Bardem finds himself at the center of a controversy linking Pink, Macklemore, and the Israel-Gaza conflict. Bardem raised eyebrows by promoting a Change.org petition to remove Pink as a UNICEF ambassador. The petition argues Pink’s comments conflict with her ambassadorial role, which should advocate for peace, understanding, and humanitarian values.
The petition urges UNICEF to maintain an impartial stance, supporting all children, regardless of nationality or heritage. Bardem’s involvement has sparked criticism from fans and celebrities. Michael Rapaport, for instance, mocked Bardem’s action as unnecessary, urging him to address Pink directly if he had issues with her statements.
Actress Selma Blair questioned the rationale behind Bardem’s support for the petition, expressing confusion over why someone would want Pink removed for her remarks. Comments on social media also reflected divided opinions. Some defended Pink, while others backed Bardem’s stance, arguing that Pink’s position was contradictory to an ambassador’s duty.
The controversy originated from Macklemore’s performance at MetLife Stadium, where he advocated for Palestinians. This led to criticism from the @Stop_Antisemitism Instagram account and Pink herself. Pink defended her position, stating her Jewish heritage and emphasizing that her comments were not anti-Palestinian. She reiterated her belief in protecting innocent lives and called for a peaceful future for Palestinians.
Pink dismissed the notion of silencing other artists, stressing that her response was a personal reaction to the message presented by Macklemore during his performance. She clarified that her primary concern was about fear and security, particularly as a Jewish individual, without endorsing any particular slogan.
Macklemore, having faced backlash for his performance, reiterated that his message of equality should not be deemed controversial. His involvement in Ed Sheeran’s tour ended after some venues refused to host performances with him on the lineup.
