Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin dismissed claims that Ireland’s criticism of Israel has veered into antisemitism. The controversy arose during a politically charged soccer match as Irish players voted on whether to boycott the game against Israel. In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Martin detailed Ireland’s stance, criticizing Israel’s military actions in Gaza as disproportionate and advocating for increased humanitarian aid. Martin emphasized Ireland’s history of conflict resolution, asserting its role as a peace-promoter worldwide.
During the interview, Martin addressed Ireland’s strong pro-Palestinian position, linking it to the country’s history and sense of justice. He condemned Hamas’s attack on October 7 while defending Israel’s right to security, advocating for a two-state solution that includes peaceful coexistence for Palestinians. Martin stressed that antisemitism is not tolerated in Ireland, highlighting the country’s annual Holocaust commemorations and the contributions of Jewish communities.
“We have no tolerance for antisemitism, none,” Martin stated.
The controversy impacted Irish soccer, with players facing pressure to boycott the UEFA Nations League fixture against Israel. Despite a notable call for boycott, the majority chose to play, and only one player withdrew from the squad. The match locations were adjusted to ease tensions, with games played outside Ireland without access for Irish supporters.
The American Jewish Committee expressed concerns about antisemitism in Ireland to Martin, citing pervasive issues. Martin defended Ireland, citing its global efforts against antisemitism and rejecting any broad tolerance for such sentiments. He reaffirmed the importance of Ireland’s role as a peace advocate in global conflicts.
Martin reflected on Ireland’s experience in conflict resolution, underscoring its diplomatic responsibilities as it holds the European Union Council presidency. He shared insights from personal experiences, including interactions with Israeli and Palestinian peace advocates, which inspired his perspective.
Amid these tensions, Ireland maintains its pro-Palestinian stance, with societal protests and media opposition to Israeli participation in events. Martin’s critical assessment of Israel’s actions extended to his United Nations address, where he called for accountability for the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
Outside the Middle East, Martin discussed Russia’s war in Ukraine, advocating for ceasefire along current battle lines and rejecting territorial conquest by force. Ireland has offered humanitarian aid to Ukraine while preserving its military neutrality.
The prime minister also touched on the prospect of Irish reunification, supporting the idea but emphasizing the need for community reconciliation first. He noted the U.S.’s historic role in the Northern Ireland peace process, suggesting potential future involvement.
