Los Angeles Lakers Enter a New Chapter Without LeBron James

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a new phase as they begin their first season in eight years without superstar LeBron James. Throughout his tenure, James broke numerous records and achieved milestones, including memorable moments with his son, Bronny James, who the Lakers drafted 55th in 2024. They made history with the first father-to-son assist and vice versa.

This offseason, LeBron decided to leave the Lakers, choosing to explore free agency. After much anticipation about possible returns to the Cleveland Cavaliers or Miami Heat, James accepted a two-year contract with the Philadelphia 76ers.

During the Lakers’ training camp media session, Bronny James expressed his thoughts about playing without his father. “Feels like he’s not here. … He’s my dad. I spent almost 22 years with him, so, just another experience that I’m gonna be a part of, and I’m excited how it’s gonna feel during the season, too. Looking forward to it,” Bronny told reporters. He described the situation as “something different.”

The Lakers’ new roster includes Walker Kessler, acquired through a sign-and-trade deal with the Utah Jazz. The team also brought in guards Quentin Grimes and Collin Sexton to enhance their backcourt lineup.

Last season, Bronny James had a reserve position on the Lakers’ main squad and contributed to their G League team, the Coachella Valley Lakers. Bronny participated in 42 games, averaging 2.9 points, 1.2 assists, and 0.6 rebounds per game over 8.9 minutes. Whether he will rise to stardom or face challenges in a league where his father excelled remains uncertain. “I’m excited for the experience, to experience something different with him not being here and to see how the staff treats me without him being there and all my teammates and stuff like that. I’m excited for it, and I’m excited for the season,” Bronny added during the media interaction.

The Lakers’ regular season begins on Wednesday, Oct. 21, facing the Golden State Warriors. A potential first on-court match between Bronny and LeBron could occur on Christmas Day when the Lakers host the 76ers.
