Rahm Emanuel Urges Democrats Against Impeaching Trump

During an appearance on NBC News’ “Meet the Press,” former Chicago Mayor and White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel advised Democrats not to pursue impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump if they gain control of the House of Representatives. Emanuel emphasized that focusing on ethics reform would be a more constructive approach.

Emanuel stated, “No, because it’s not going anywhere, and it’s going to be a food fight, and it’s just going to be we return to the politics of fighting.” He argued that impeachment would only reinforce the perception of Washington as ineffective. Instead, he proposed delivering a comprehensive ethics package that could lead to meaningful change.

“You’re never going to get an impeachment,” Emanuel noted. “Deliver the change. Deliver a comprehensive ethics package that uses the investigations to then deliver change.”

As the midterm elections approach, Democrats appear to have a significant advantage over Republicans. According to projections, Democrats are expected to win 215 seats in the House compared to 201 for the GOP. They need three more victories among 19 competitive races to secure a majority, while Republicans would need to win at least 17 of these races.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has not committed to impeachment proceedings but indicated that making life more affordable for Americans is a higher priority for Democrats.

Emanuel, who served two terms as Chicago’s mayor and as chief of staff under President Barack Obama, is reportedly considering a presidential run in 2028. He positions himself as a moderate Democrat and opposes some of the policies supported by democratic socialists, despite backing certain far-left figures like Michigan’s Abdul El-Sayed.

Emanuel told Fox News Digital, “You think people wanna support defunding the police? You think they wanna support open borders, open prisons? Run on it. I don’t, and that’s not the party’s position.” He advocates a party inclusive of both progressive and pragmatic members.

At the Texas Tribune Festival, Emanuel expressed admiration for Democratic Texas Senate nominee James Talarico, while remaining noncommittal about supporting El-Sayed’s candidacy, deferring judgment to Michigan voters.

“Look, I mean, it doesn’t matter what I do… it matters what the Michigan voters think,” Emanuel told Fox News Digital.

Emanuel confirmed his hope that El-Sayed captures the Senate seat for Democrats.
