In January, Mike Tomlin concluded his 19-year tenure as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers following their playoff loss to the Houston Texans. He now contributes to NBC Sports as part of the “Sunday Night Football” pre-game, halftime, and postgame coverage. Tomlin appears content with his broadcasting duties. However, speculation about his potential return to coaching lingers.
Recently, during a conversation with Kay Adams, Hall of Famer Cris Carter criticized Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni. Carter suggested Tomlin could be a strong candidate to replace Sirianni. “It takes a bad coach to do what he did at the end of the game, and that was take victory away from NFL players,” Carter expressed regarding Sirianni’s last-minute decisions.
The critique stemmed from Sirianni’s costly call during the Eagles’ recent game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. With eight seconds remaining, the Eagles achieved what seemed to be a winning field goal. Nevertheless, they chose not to kick the ball into the end zone for a touchback, allowing Jacksonville to run it back to midfield and call a timeout. The Jaguars then scored a decisive 57-yard field goal, turning the Eagles’ apparent victory into a frustrating loss. Sirianni accepted responsibility for the decision.
Carter questioned Sirianni’s strategy, wondering how Tomlin might have managed the scenario. He commented: “Man, what would Mike Tomlin look like in Philadelphia? What would Mike Tomlin have done in that situation?” Carter believes Tomlin would have avoided putting the Eagles in such a predicament.
Tomlin himself mentioned in an earlier interview on Pro Football Focus’s NFL Show that he still harbors a passion for coaching and “learned to never say never.” He noted that any future coaching position would need to be the right fit, as he wouldn’t consider offers from every team.
For now, Sirianni remains the Eagles’ head coach, while Tomlin enjoys his NBC Sports role. Carter’s remarks highlight Tomlin’s appeal as a potential coach, given his experience and championship background, should the Eagles seek a change.
