Pennsylvania is currently experiencing its most severe measles outbreak in 35 years, with over 1,100 reported cases. However, experts believe the actual number is likely higher. Recently, a 39-year-old unvaccinated woman in Franklin County died from a probable acute cardiac event linked to measles complications, marking the state’s sixth measles-related death.
Governor Josh Shapiro has criticized Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for sowing distrust in measles vaccinations. Despite the state declining Kennedy’s assistance, local efforts have made progress. State health statistics reveal that more than 5,700 MMR vaccinations were administered at 198 pop-up clinics since April. Interest in the vaccine has surged; typically, about 25,000 doses are administered each month, but in September, over 56,000 doses were given.
Pennsylvania health officials are coordinating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They have requested CDC’s Epi-Aid team support, contingent on CDC recognizing the state’s death toll. Although only two deaths have been acknowledged by the CDC, Pennsylvania has formally requested federal help. A Department of Health and Human Services spokesperson confirmed CDC will provide additional support to manage the outbreak and prevent further spread.
