German Police Probe Humanoid Robot Incident for Alleged Harassment

German police have confiscated a humanoid robot following allegations that it inappropriately touched a 16-year-old girl and made sexually suggestive gestures. Authorities are investigating whether two young men, who reportedly livestreamed the incident in Cologne, intentionally controlled the robot’s actions.

Incident Details

The unusual event took place on October 10, just before midnight near a fast-food establishment on a lively nightlife street in Cologne. According to a police statement released on Monday, video footage shared online appears to show the teenage girl with two friends. A red-and-gold robot, approximately 4 feet tall and wearing athletic gear, approaches her from behind. Both police reports and the videos suggest the robot touched the girl’s buttocks and made thrusting motions toward her.

An image provided by the Cologne Police on October 11, shows the robot confiscated as part of the investigation. The robot’s owner, a 16-year-old male, along with his 19-year-old friend, allegedly recorded the encounter and streamed it live on social media.

Police Investigation

Upon being alerted, officers found the two young men nearby. The robot was already placed in the trunk of a Volkswagen, but police seized both the robot and the suspects’ smartphones as evidence.

German media outlets identified the robot as a commercially available humanoid model costing around 5,000 euros, or approximately $5,600. One involved individual later claimed on TikTok that the robot inadvertently collided with the girl while avoiding another person. However, extended online videos suggest the robot continued to make suggestive movements after the initial contact.

Legal and Investigative Challenges

Investigators are analyzing surveillance and online recordings to reconstruct the sequence of events. They aim to establish if the robot’s actions were remotely controlled, specifically programmed, or independent.

The situation presents novel legal challenges. Under German law, sexual harassment offenses typically require direct physical contact between humans. Legal experts have noted that using a robot may complicate prosecution due to existing harassment regulations.

Thus, law enforcement is looking into charges of a sexually motivated insult. Potential unauthorized image publication violations are also under consideration. No formal charges have been pressed against the suspects yet.

This case underscores new hurdles for law enforcement as humanoid robots become more widely available to the public, raising questions about accountability when machines engage in potentially criminal behavior.
