Ancient Ring Discovery Sheds Light on Cleopatra’s Era

Archaeologists have recently revealed a significant find: an ancient ring discovered in a submerged harbor connected to Cleopatra. This discovery provides insights into a lost wonder of the ancient world.

Discovery in Alexandria

The ring was found in the submerged royal harbor of Alexandria, Egypt. The European Institute for Underwater Archaeology announced the find this month. Described as a “perfect object” by experts, the ring was located at a site on the sunken island of Antirhodos. This area is known as part of Alexandria’s ancient royal quarters associated with Cleopatra VII, Mark Antony, and Julius Caesar.

Depicting the Lighthouse of Alexandria

The bronze ring showcases the Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. This makes it the first known signet ring to feature this landmark. The lighthouse itself was constructed in the third century B.C. It played a crucial role in guiding ships for centuries until earthquakes gradually demolished it by the 14th century.

The ring’s exact age remains uncertain. However, its iconography is similar to imagery seen on some coins from the 2nd century A.D.

Significance of the Find

Franck Goddio, president of the European Institute for Underwater Archaeology, highlighted the importance of the ring’s location. “The discovery of the ring-signet is even more important as it has been excavated in the legendary palace of the Island of Antirhodos, that once was a center of power,” he stated.

This underwater excavation requires meticulous effort. According to Alexandra F. Morris, an ancient history lecturer at Queen’s University Belfast, every artifact must be carefully recorded and retrieved by divers. She also suggested the palace may have served administrative purposes, potentially overseeing activities at the Lighthouse of Alexandria.

Educational and Historical Impact

The ring, despite its unknown age, illuminates the lighthouse’s historical significance to Alexandria. Morris explained that the ring represents how the lighthouse became a symbol of the city even long after its construction. She sees potential in using replicas or models to enhance public accessibility to Alexandria’s underwater history.

Morris remarked that the ring could serve as an interactive piece for touch-based exhibits. This would benefit blind and low-vision individuals or anyone interested in the archaeological site.
