Texas Longhorns Face Setback in College Football Push

Texas suffered a tough defeat over the weekend, losing 27-24 at home to an unranked Florida team. After beginning the season with a 4-0 record, including a significant win over the former No. 1 team, Ohio State, the Longhorns have now faced consecutive narrow losses. The first came against Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, followed by the recent defeat to the Gators.

The loss to Florida is particularly concerning as the Gators played without their starting quarterback and top wide receiver. Arch Manning’s performance was a key factor in Texas’ loss. Manning completed 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and one touchdown, but a late fumble ended their chance of a comeback. Consequently, Texas’ College Football Playoff (CFP) prospects have diminished significantly. According to Polymarket, the Longhorns’ chances of securing a CFP spot have plummeted to 36%, from over 70% before this match.

Further Developments: Texas’ Coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the situation with a firm message to Arch Manning about improving performance.

The Longhorns began the season strong with victories over Ohio State and a win at then-No. 14 Tennessee. They also achieved decisive wins against Texas State and UTSA. However, recent losses have been damaging. Texas now holds a 4-2 overall record and is 1-2 in SEC play. Their current standing is No. 19 in the AP Top 25, a fall from their earlier No. 1 ranking. While two losses might not seem critical, losing to unranked teams poses a challenge for Coach Steve Sarkisian and his squad.

Their CFP hopes are further impeded by an unforgiving upcoming schedule. Texas is set to host No. 7 Ole Miss on Saturday, a team with a 5-1 record and recent consecutive wins. They will then face Mississippi State and Missouri on the road, followed by games against LSU, Arkansas, and Texas A&M. Five of their remaining six games are against SEC teams with winning records, three of which are away games. Given the potential impact of even one additional loss, the Florida game has severely affected their prospects.

If Texas fails to make the 12-team playoff, the repercussions could be substantial. Expectations for Coach Sarkisian and quarterback Arch Manning were already high, considering the talent on the roster. Not recovering from these losses and failing to secure a CFP spot would be a significant setback for the program.
