DoorDash has announced a significant acquisition of Instacart for $17 billion. This strategic move aims to enhance DoorDash’s position in the grocery delivery sector.
Despite being acquired, Instacart will maintain its brand identity and app. Consumers who prefer Instacart can still place orders through their platform, while Instacart’s independent contractors, known as ‘shoppers,’ will continue to fulfill these orders.
Retailers now have the option to partner with either Instacart or DoorDash. Instacart users will benefit from access to an additional 50,000 stores that DoorDash covers.
Instacart, established in 2012, has been a pioneer in grocery and convenience store deliveries across the U.S. and Canada. The company boasts a workforce of 600,000 shoppers, who completed 338 million orders last year based on company reports. Instacart currently holds a market valuation of $14 billion.
