President Donald Trump extended an invitation to Democratic Michigan Representative Haley Stevens to join the Republican Party. This comes after Stevens switched her endorsement in the United States Senate race from Democrat Abdul El-Sayed to GOP candidate Mike Rogers.
Speaking to supporters at a rally in Dubuque, Iowa, Trump praised Stevens’ decision as ‘brave.’ Stevens announced her endorsement alongside Rogers at a church event in Detroit earlier in the day.
‘She was very brave in doing it,’ Trump stated. ‘I don’t know Haley, I’ve never met her. But she expressed what few are willing to, and I’d love her to join the Republican Party. That might even happen.’
Trump emphasized her loyalty to the people of Michigan, describing the decision as ‘almost unprecedented’ and crucial for upcoming elections.
Stevens’ switch drew criticism from key Democratic figures, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Schumer labeled the move as a ‘despicable betrayal’ in a post on social media.
This is an evolving story, with more updates anticipated soon.
