Carnival Cruise Line’s New Gratuity Program Sparks Debate

Carnival Cruise Line has introduced a new program that has generated mixed reactions. They have begun placing stickers on guests’ cruise cards to indicate if gratuities were prepaid. This move has both detractors and supporters within the community.

On October 28, a TikTok user shared a video showing a sticker on her Carnival Cruise Line card during a trip on the Carnival Panorama. The sticker read, “Crew love, I pre-paid my gratuities.” Along with the sticker, a note was left in her stateroom expressing gratitude for prepaying the gratuities. The note said, “Your support is greatly appreciated and helps recognize the many team members who work together to make your cruise vacation fun, memorable, and enjoyable.” It concluded with a thank you for choosing Carnival.

“The Carnival gratuity program is an important way guests recognize our hardworking team members and ensure that gratuities are shared among both guest-facing and behind-the-scenes crew who make great vacations possible,” Carnival stated in a statement to Fox News Digital.

Carnival explained that the ‘Crew Love’ stickers provide recognition for generous guests while informing the crew about prepaid gratuities. They also noted it is part of a broader pilot program and are open to feedback.

The introduction of these stickers has prompted a range of reactions among TikTok users. Some users voiced that tipping should be a private affair. One user stated, “I prepay my gratuities, but I feel it’s my business, not everyone else’s. I don’t like this at all.” Another added, “People shouldn’t be shamed if they can’t afford to prepay.” There was also feedback about preferring to tip in cash directly to the service staff.

Conversely, others embraced the new program. “I love it! We always prepay our gratuities and tip extra,” one user commented, while another said they noticed better service when tipping upfront.

A discussion on Reddit highlighted similar concerns. Users described the idea of having visible stickers as “tacky” and questioned the need for making tipping public.

The sticker controversy adds to ongoing debates about costs and fees on cruise lines. Earlier in the year, Fox News Digital reported on passenger frustrations as some cruise lines increased daily gratuities and service charges. There has also been pushback regarding Carnival’s plans for dynamic pricing on drink and Wi-Fi packages.

The issue of gratuity transparency in the cruise industry remains contentious. Carnival has stated that the feedback will influence how they proceed with the program.
