Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly settled into a property on a friend’s estate, pausing their house-hunting efforts in Britain. This decision allows them flexibility in choosing their permanent residence. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex returned to Britain in August after six years in California but have not sold their home in Montecito. There’s no set timeline for their stay in the UK, according to reports.
Currently, they reside with a wealthy friend near the Cotswolds. To maintain their privacy, the exact location remains undisclosed. Recent reports suggest they moved from the main house to another property on the estate. They have stopped searching for a new home during this period.
Newsweek approached the Sussex camp, but representatives declined to comment on their private living arrangements.
Their motivations for returning to Britain remain unclear. Harry mentioned a desire to enroll their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, in British schools. However, there’s no confirmation if their stay aligns with their children’s education timeline, which could last until around 2039 for Lilibet.
Prince Harry and Meghan’s Living Arrangements
The couple hasn’t stayed with the royal family since returning. Instead, they live with a friend in the English countryside. Meghan shared glimpses of their new lifestyle, highlighting scenes contrasting with the California sun, like rain boots splashing in puddles and children warming by the fire.
Archie and Lilibet attend a British private school, and the family recently changed schools due to security concerns over traffic congestion. They traveled abroad for the half-term holiday but returned in time for school. Their decision to buy property would indicate long-term plans in the UK. Reports suggest they initially considered properties worth around £10 million (approximately $13 million).
Future Considerations for Harry and Meghan
Speculation suggests the couple might return to California after Christmas. However, several factors might keep them in the UK until summer or longer. The Invictus Games, a significant event for Harry, will take place in Birmingham, England, in July. Staying in the UK offers opportunities to elevate its profile through local engagements.
August 2027 marks the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death. Harry plans a tribute project, potentially a Netflix documentary, to honor his mother. Remaining in Britain supports this project by facilitating location filming and interviews with UK-based friends and relatives.
Another consideration is reconciliation with the royal family. In a 2025 interview, Harry emphasized his intention to focus on his father, King Charles III, over the next year. The couple met with the king in July and spoke soon after their move to Britain. Opportunities to see the king are rare, even for royals like Harry’s brother, Prince William.
The Sussexes plan to spend Christmas back in California, potentially avoiding tension if they were invited to Sandringham, where the royal family traditionally gathers. This decision likely prevents potential familial conflicts, especially with William, who no longer communicates with Harry.
