A Mother’s Journey Raising Awareness About Down Syndrome

Raising Awareness and Understanding

Paige Crowder, a 27-year-old from Indiana, faced the unexpected news of her son Levi being born with Down syndrome. Determined to change perceptions, Crowder dedicated herself to raising awareness and educating others about the realities of parenting a child with this condition.

“Getting Levi’s diagnosis during pregnancy shifted my view on Down syndrome,” Crowder shared in an interview with Newsweek. She initially held misconceptions, but those were based on assumptions rather than experience. Being Levi’s mom altered her perspective profoundly.

Understanding Down Syndrome

Down syndrome, known as trisomy 21, is a genetic condition involving an extra chromosome 21. It results in distinct physical features, learning challenges, and behavioral differences. According to the Cleveland Clinic, 5,700 children are born with Down syndrome in the United States annually. Lifelong care is common, but many can live fulfilling lives into adulthood with support.

Crowder sees Levi as “so much more than a diagnosis.” He is described as funny, affectionate, determined, and happy, embodying his own individuality.

Levi’s Story Through Social Media

On her Instagram, @paigevictoriacrowder, Crowder documents Levi’s journey. Her videos depict joyful moments, from vacations to family photo shoots. She aims for people to see Levi as a child first, showcasing his personality, relationships, milestones, and the unique aspects of his life.

Crowder wishes to reach mothers in similar situations, remembering her own uncertainty when hearing the diagnosis. “If another mother sees Levi, I hope she feels hope for a beautiful future for her child too,” she explains.

Support and Treatments Available

Down syndrome is lifelong but treatments such as physical and speech therapy, early intervention, special education, and management of health conditions like heart issues can help children meet their potential.

For Crowder’s family, life resembles that of any other family with a toddler, filled with routines, laughs, and chaos. Levi has additional needs, but those do not define their family or their experience of him.
