Aaron Donald has rejoined the Los Angeles Rams, ending his retirement after two and a half years. The Rams announced Donald’s return, pairing him with Myles Garrett on their defensive line.
Donald, now 35, held discussions, prepared extensively, and engaged in intensive workouts before making his decision. He had a remarkable career over ten seasons entirely with the Rams, both in St. Louis and Los Angeles. He earned three AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards and 10 Pro Bowl selections, along with eight All-Pro honors and a Super Bowl victory. He unexpectedly retired in March 2024.
In retirement, Donald spent time with his family. The prospect of a comeback arose after the Rams acquired Garrett, who is one of Donald’s few equals in the current defensive line landscape. Donald and Garrett have collectively won five of the last nine Defensive Player of the Year awards, with Garrett claiming two of the last three with the Cleveland Browns.
Donald’s return strengthens the Rams’ roster as they target another NFL title under coach Sean McVay. Los Angeles has bolstered its defense by adding cornerbacks Trent McDuffie and Jaylen Watson from Kansas City. This enhances a defense that complements an offense returning every key player around MVP quarterback Matthew Stafford.
Although a former Pittsburgh Panther, Donald’s focus now is on the Rams’ chance for another championship. He joins a formidable defensive line alongside Garrett and promising talents like Byron Young, Kobie Turner, and Braden Fiske, presenting a daunting challenge for opponents.
His decision reactivates his eligibility for the Pro Football Hall of Fame, originally set for 2029. Yet, Donald’s priority remains to earn a second Super Bowl ring.
