Acting Attorney General Alleges DOJ Overreach in Trump Investigation

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche expressed concern over the scope of the investigation into President Donald Trump by the Department of Justice (DOJ) during the Biden administration. He stated that the investigation was so extensive that even Mar-a-Lago staff, including gardeners and low-level aides, needed criminal defense attorneys.

Speaking on Sean Hannity’s podcast, Blanche described the investigation as evidence of a ‘weaponized’ justice system. ‘Nearly anyone associated with President Trump had to secure a criminal defense attorney,’ Blanche asserted. ‘This includes his gardeners, Secret Service detail, assistants, low-level aides, senior leadership, and even the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.’

Blanche, who testified at a Senate Appropriations Subcommittee hearing, previously served as Trump’s lead criminal defense attorney. His cases included the New York hush money case and others led by former special counsel Jack Smith. When Hannity asked whether the DOJ weaponized its power, Blanche responded affirmatively, stating it was ‘weaponized in the worst way.’ He highlighted the influx of criminal defense attorneys into the administration as a result.

Blanche noted, ‘We’re not talking about targeting one person. If you were a Cabinet secretary, you needed a criminal defense attorney because Biden was coming after you.’

Recently, the DOJ announced it will not proceed with the $1.8 billion ‘anti-weaponization’ fund. This fund was part of a settlement in a case involving Trump, his family members, and the Trump Organization regarding the release of tax returns. Legal challenges faced by the fund led to a temporary court ruling that stopped its initiation. At a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing, Blanche confirmed that the administration would not continue pursuing the fund.
