Adam Hamilton’s Journey From Pastor to Senate Candidate

Adam Hamilton has built a reputation as a celebrated Christian pastor, author, and community leader in Kansas. Now, he steps into the political arena as the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate. He aims to bring his experience in leading a politically diverse congregation to Washington.

Hamilton’s wife, LaVon Bandy, has been beside him throughout his journey. Describing her as his “high school sweetheart,” he highlights her as a significant influence in his life. The couple married in June 1982, shortly after Hamilton’s high school graduation, and they have since expanded their family to include two daughters, a granddaughter, and two dogs.

Who Is Adam Hamilton?

Hamilton, a fifth-generation Kansan from Prairie Village, is widely recognized as the longtime pastor of the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection. He and LaVon founded the church in 1990 in the Kansas City area. Facing Republican Senator Roger Marshall in the November 3 election, Hamilton’s campaign focuses on reducing costs, safeguarding healthcare access, and reducing partisan divisions.

Hamilton emphasizes political cooperation as a central campaign theme. His congregation consists of Republicans, Democrats, and independents, and he claims that his experience in uniting diverse views can be applied to the political realm. According to his campaign, Hamilton joined the Senate race because Washington needs more focus on listening and problem-solving collaboratively.

He has taken a stance on various contentious issues. On reproductive rights, he supports contraceptive access and women’s health decision rights. Economically, he advocates for removing tariffs that inflate consumer prices and prioritizes lowering drug costs, enhancing rural healthcare, and expanding housing availability.

Hamilton’s Position in the Polls

Hamilton and Marshall are in a tight race leading up to the November 3 election. The latest RealClearPolling average, based on surveys from September 8 to October 14, shows Marshall at 46 percent and Hamilton close behind at 45.7 percent. This slim 0.3 percentage point lead favors the incumbent.

Different polls reflect a similarly narrow margin. An InsiderAdvantage poll from October 13-14 positioned Marshall at 48 percent and Hamilton at 47 percent, fitting within a 2.8-point margin of error. However, some surveys indicate a shift towards Hamilton. A YouGov poll conducted between September 24 and October 4 put Hamilton ahead by three points at 48 percent to 45 percent. Similarly, a September Emerson College poll gave him a two-point lead.

This competitive dynamic is particularly significant in a state with a strong Republican leaning. Donald Trump carried Kansas by over 16 points in the 2024 presidential election; the state hasn’t elected a Democratic Senator since 1932, according to RealClearPolling’s context.

Who Is LaVon Bandy?

LaVon has been part of Hamilton’s life long before his political ambitions. The couple celebrated their 44th anniversary in June 2026, having married the week after Hamilton’s high school graduation.

LaVon played a key role when the couple started what became the Church of the Resurrection in 1990 with only four people in a borrowed space. Hamilton credits her with significantly influencing his accomplishments.

On their 40th anniversary in 2022, Hamilton praised LaVon on Facebook, recounting their marriage on June 5, 1982, and her subsequent role as a partner, mother, and grandmother. Her partnership, encouragement, and questions have been pivotal in shaping his life and career.

Adam Hamilton and LaVon Bandy’s Marriage

Hamilton’s anniversary message offers an intimate glimpse into their enduring relationship. He expressed his affection for her eyes, spirit, and beauty, affirming that even after decades, she remains a source of joy.

The bond they share has been rooted in faith, which has anchored their marriage. Hamilton remarked that marrying LaVon, after his faith commitment, remains his greatest decision.

Their relationship spans Hamilton’s life journey from education to ministry to political aspirations. Central to founding their church, LaVon has been intertwined with his public life long before his Senate bid. She is portrayed not just as a supportive spouse but as a driving force in both personal and professional aspects of Hamilton’s life.

As Hamilton campaigns to convince Kansas voters that his extensive religious and community leadership equips him for the Senate, his marriage to LaVon remains a touching element of his narrative.
