In recent developments, Israeli battlefield medicine has significantly evolved during the Iranian regime-backed multi-front conflict against Israel. These advancements have also provided valuable insights for the U.S. military. A senior medical specialist from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) shared the latest breakthroughs in saving soldiers’ lives with Fox News Digital.

The intense ground offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip began in October 2023, after the group invaded Israel on October 7. During this period, advanced medical tactics were introduced on the battlefield.

Hamas’s campaign resulted in more than 1,200 deaths in southern Israel, including over forty Americans, and the kidnapping of 251 people. An IDF spokesperson detailed the new techniques: adapting operational capabilities, such as casualty evacuation and advanced medical technologies, and providing treatment under duress were key advancements.

According to the IDF medical specialist, before, like in the Second War in Lebanon in 2006, advanced life support took 15 to 20 minutes to reach casualties. Now, it can arrive almost immediately or within four minutes.

Placing medical personnel, including a doctor, in every company has allowed the IDF to make crucial early decisions. Helicopters play a vital role in swiftly transporting serious casualties to medical facilities, a fact highlighted by video evidence shared with Fox News Digital.

One of the most notable advances is rapid evacuation, enabling swift transfers to Israeli hospitals. Emphasis on using blood products since 2013 has focused on stanching bleeding more effectively. The IDF, pioneering plasma use on injury sites instead of traditional fluids, developed a rapid deployment system for blood used by first responders.

Improvements in lifesaving practices include a sophisticated data system transmitting patient information over networks, ensuring every provider has access to the details. This data sharing has proven effective, according to the IDF specialist.

The IDF’s case mortality rate has dropped significantly from 15% in the 2006 Hezbollah conflict to 7.1% in 2023. The IDF has relied on a foundational 2012 U.S. study about combat casualty care covering American medical aid during the Iraq War.

Dr. Marc Siegel, Fox News’s senior medical analyst and NYU Langone Medical Center clinical professor, remarked on the battlefield advances in Israel. He emphasized that these innovations, including surgical techniques and treatments like Nexobrid, contribute to global medical progress. His book, “The Angels Among Us,” features a chapter on medical rescues in the Gaza war.

The U.S. Army and IDF have collaborated on improving battlefield medicine for years. A 2026 U.S. military report titled “Israeli Defense Force Medical Lessons Learned” advised the American military to adopt Israeli advances from the 2023 Swords of Iron War.

Despite Israel’s preparedness, a transformation process was painful but necessary. The U.S. can avoid this by preparing now.

An IDF spokesperson confirmed ongoing cooperation allowing American officers to learn from Israel’s emergency medical practices. Benjamin Weinthal reports on developments in Israel, Iran, and the broader region, and can be followed on Twitter @BenWeinthal.
