Residents in Huntsville, Alabama, witnessed an unusual but heartwarming event this summer. A young boy, Soren Griffin, dressed in a banana costume, went door-to-door in his neighborhood. His mother, Leah Farrow, shared with CBS News that Soren, who is autistic, has a fascination with ringing doorbells, a passion that cannot usually be satisfied with casual outings.
For Soren, Halloween stands out as a favorite holiday because it allows him to ring doorbells freely. To celebrate his 11th birthday in July, Farrow took a chance and posted a request on Facebook, asking if anyone would allow Soren to trick-or-treat at their house. She offered to provide candy in return.
Farrow anticipated a few replies, but the response was overwhelming, with over 100 neighbors expressing their willingness to participate. Many were strangers to Farrow before this interaction. She noted, “These aren’t my friends. I mean, now they are.”
On his birthday, Soren, in his banana suit, joyfully visited numerous homes, delighting in the experience as he collected a variety of treats. Interestingly, none of the participants accepted Farrow’s offer to supply the candy. Instead, Soren received a range of gifts such as Doritos, Goldfish, Play-Doh, and Lego sets.
Farrow expressed her gratitude, feeling overwhelmed by the community’s generosity, and wondered how she could ever repay them. However, the neighbors assured her that no repayment was needed. One neighbor remarked, “You don’t often get the opportunity to directly help someone you don’t really know.” Another added that witnessing Soren’s joy was “miraculous.”
